All Greek and Roman to me!

greek, history 1 Comment

I had to come up with a few names after my conversation with R yesterday. Listed below are the ones I found apt, not bad I would say for a guy ignorant of Greek/Roman mythology.

Freya, Greek Goddess of love and Fertility

I first read about Freya (pronounced Fray-ah) in Forsyth’s novel “The Devil’s Alternative”, one of the liners was named after her and it registered in my mind as I liked the name. She is more commonly known by her other name Aphrodite.

Luna, Roman Goddess of Moon

Luna is a more familiar name for the Moon, the words lunar and lunatic being derived from this ancient Goddess name.

Eden, Garden of Eve

Garden of Eden is Eve’s paradise, where Adam and Eve sought delight in each other’s company and were expelled from it for having eaten the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge according to the Genesis.

Isis, Roman Goddess of Fertility and Motherhood

I heard this name only quite recently when one of the projects within the company was named after Isis. She is also known as Queen of Heaven and appears to be distinct from the ancient Egyptian Goddess of motherhood, Aset.

Venus, Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus, named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Her greek equivalent being Aphrodite or Freya as described above.

Please take the test below (you know who!) and post the outcome in the comments section anonymously, thanks!

Which Greek Goddess Are You?

Tidbits :

1) Hedonism - Derived from greek word ‘Hedone’ meaning pleasure, the philosophy put forth by Epicurius that seeking pleasure in one’s life is ideal.

2) Interestingly, in Hinduism, Shiva, the destroyer symbolically represented/worshipped by/as a phallus in temples and Uma, his consort figuratively indicate the divine union of the male and the female.
